Prae-Wa Silk
Prae-Wa silk is a typical silk in Kalasin province. The word "Prae" means silk cloth which has not been cut into dress while "Wa" is Thai measure (equal to about 2 meters). Thus, Prae-Wa is about 2-metered long silk cloth.
Only in special occasions, people here will get dressed using Prae-Wa as a shawl (called "Sa Bai"), a turban, or a scarf. Prae-Wa signifies social status and that people have a beautiful and valuable cloth. The exquisite design of this silk comes from a combination of "Lai Khit" (continuous supplementary weave) and LAI JOK (discontinuous supplementary weave). So, some cloths require more than three months in weaving, especially "Nakha" design. This design is Kalasin's unique pattern which is more fantastic and delicate than other designs.
Prae-Wa is a hand woven silk with fine and elegant designs. Its weaving process is quite unique and different from other hand woven cloths because one Prae-Wa cloth has colors and various designs presented in concert. This art is handed down from Kalasin ancestors. It is produced only in Kalasin province and has been exported to Japan and USA.
